Don’t worry, I’m just as ashamed of myself for the click-bait headline as you are. My apologies.

This week, I made a Buzzfeed-esque quiz, using AI, that tells you if your job will be gobbled up by AI. A Buzzkill Quiz, if you will?

Ironically, while building it my key take-away was that AI won’t take our jobs….

But it is going to take the things we do in our jobs. I know I’m splitting hairs, but stay with me.

If you’re a Barista, you don’t just “make coffee”. You weigh coffee beans, grind coffee beans, express espresso, steam milk, pour milk etc etc. If one day, someone helped you by weighing all the beans ahead of time, you’d still be a Barista. You just wouldn’t have weighed any coffee beans.

The same applies when one day, someone does everything for you except for pouring milk. You’re still a Barista… But probably not one that’s worth the wages.

See where I’m going?

If we lean into a second analogy, AI is coming for the individual Jenga blocks that make up our jobs, not the whole tower. If AI pinches too many blocks, then we’re in real strife and the tower topples. 

Almost every job in the world now has at least a couple blocks AI will steal. Many jobs are riddled with them, and they’re the ones being taken first.

But if you haven’t lost too many blocks you’re still in the game! And there are things you can do to strengthen what’s left of your tower. (I’m going to leave the analogies alone now).

Below are the key areas you can focus on without having to completely re-train, that AI will have, the least impact in:

• AI Expertise - Bit of a no-brainer really. With the explosion of AI platforms and tools, at this stage they still need people who know how to use them. Be one of these people.

• Sales - Showing a company you make money rather than cost a salary will always be valuable. Add to this that people always prefer to buy from a real person means sales roles won’t disappear completely for a while.

• People Management - Demonstrate you’re a strong leader as well as having technical skills, and you’re instantly more valuable.

• Creativity - Generative AI’s whole thing is that it uses info that already exists to solve problems or answer questions. Be truly creative with your thinking and problem solving and your output becomes too hard to replicate.

I’ve said this before though - what do I know, I’m just an idiot with a newsletter right?

The only thing for sure is that this is all moving very quick. Jump on the bus otherwise you’ll get left behind.
